CUWB Plenary: Keynotes by Professors Susann Fegter, Christine Hunner-Kreisel and Tobia Fattore

Dr. Susann Fegter is Professor for Historical and General Educational Sciences with a specific focus on Gender, Technologies and Work at the University of Technology Berlin (TU Berlin). Her research is located in the broad area of childhood studies and gender studies on questions of Bildung and education. In her PhD Susann Fegter did a discourse analysis on “the crisis of boys” in schools and families in German media discourse as public pedagogies (between 1999 and 2009). She also has long years of experiences in doing qualitative research with children and youth and in leading qualitative research Currently Susann Fegter is one of the project leaders of the multinational qualitative study on “Children´s Understandings of Well-being” (CUWB) with research teams in 25 countries worldwide. The CUWB Berlin part study has a specific focus on children´s understanding of digital well-being. Another current research project, funded by the German Science and Research Association DFG, works on changing concepts of gendered professionalism in pedagogical institutions. Part of this project is the methodological development of a discourse analysis approach towards statements in focus group discussions. Since 2016 Susann Fegter is Vice-Director for Internationalization and Research at the School of Education (SETUB) at TU Berlin and since 2017 speaker of the graduate program DiGiTal, a cooperative program of several universities in Berlin, financed by BCP, to support gender equalities in academic careers and in research on digitalization from all disciplines.  

Christine Hunner-Kreisel has a Professorship with the denomination Transculturality and Gender and is working at the University of Vechta in the Department of Social Work. Her research focus is on educational transition processes, on processes of inclusion and exclusion in schools, on transnational migration (with a main focus on the post-soviet country Azerbaijan), on intersectionality and on concepts of children’s well-being and social inequality; finally on experiences of racism and discrimination of children and youth identifying as Muslim in Germany. She is Editor-in-Chief of the international Journal „Child Indicator Research“ and board member of International Society for Child Indicators. Since 2015 she is together with Prof. Dr. Susann Fegter/TU-Berlin and Dr. Tobia Fattore/Macquarie University/Sydney) project director of the multinational qualitative study: Children’s Understandings of Well-being – Global and Local Contexts (www.cuwb.org).

Tobia Fattore is a member of the Department of Sociology, Macquarie University, Australia. His theoretical and empirical research interests are in the broad areas of the sociology of childhood and sociology of work. He is currently working on several projects in these areas. This includes a sociological examination of children’s well-being, that analyses children’s understandings and sense of well-being and how this reflects processes of modernisation. He has undertaken a study of children’s work in developed economies that shows how transformations in the world of work have created different opportunities for children for social integration. He is currently a coordinating lead researcher on the multi-national study Children’s Understandings of Well-being – Global and Local Contexts’ which involves a qualitative investigation into how children experience well-being from a comparative and global perspective, to explore the relative importance of local, regional and national contexts for children’s well-being (see http://www.cuwb.org/). He is also currently a Visiting Professor at the Facultad de Ciencias Sociales, Universidad de Palermo, a serving Board Member of Research Committee for the Sociology of Childhood (International Sociological Association) and a Board Member of the International Society for Childhood Indicators.
