Abstract: In this presentation, we establish a horizontal exploration of pattern mining. We first present, and explain pattern mining problems and algorithms. We then show some well-know tools and benchmarks of pattern mining, followed by two case of studies, the first one is market basket analysis, and the second one is information retrieval. We finish the presentation by discussing about open research directions of this field.  This presentation allows to better understand the intuition, limitations, and benefits of the existing pattern mining problems, and algorithms. As a result, practitioners represented by students, researchers, and developers, can receive some guidance for selecting the most suitable pattern mining problem, as well as, the corresponding method for their particular case.
