Prof. Ilkka Hanski from the University of Helsinki is one of the most prominent ecologists in the world. With more than 200 influential papers and with several books, he has made a substantial and invaluable contribution to the field of ecology. Prof Hanski is most famous for his development of metapopulation theory and for his research on the biology and ecology of the Glanville fritillary butterfly inhabiting fragmented landscapes. His studies have formed the basis for management and conservation of fragmented habitats and their biodiversity throughout the world. Prof. Hanski leads the large and influential Metapopulation Research Group, which combines theoretical and experimental population biology (www.helsinki.fi/science/metapop).
Professor Ilkka Hanski visited University of Tartu from 13th to 15th of October 2011 as a guest of Centre of Excellence in Biodiversity Research (FIBIR – fibir.ut.ee). In Tartu, Prof. Hanski gave two seminars, both of them are recorded and available at www.uttv.ee.

Professor Ilkka Hanski (Helsingi Ülikool) on üks silmapaistvamaid teadlasi kogu maailmas.
Professor Ilkka Hanski viibis Tartu Ülikoolis 13.-15. oktoobril  2011 Bioloogilise mitmekesisuse tippkeskuse (FIBIR – fibir.ut.ee) külalisena. Tartus andis prof. Hanski kaks seminari, mida on võimalik vaadata Tartu Ülikooli Televisiooni kodulehelt (www.uttv.ee).
