"This year we decided to combine celebration of 381st foundation day of the university and Gustav Adolf's day in order to emphasise the significance of the Swedish king Gustav II Adolf for the university, Tartu and whole Estonia," said Prof. Volli Kalm, Rector of the University of Tartu. According to Kalm, a modern and developing university needs to pay attention to its history, in order to remember, understand and fairly evaluate the contribution of the people, who worked for the development of the university in the past.

"Decision of King Gustav II Adolf to establish the university exactly in Tartu has had an impact on the development of the characteristic features of Tartu, and it also plays a significant role in the development process of the Estonian state," recognizes Prof. Daniel Sävborg, one of the leaders of the day, Head of the Department of Scandinavian Studies. According to Sävborg, celebration of the day Gustav II Adolf died, 6 November 1632, has very long traditions both in Sweden and in Finland. "Celebration of the day at the University of Tartu dates back to 2010, when annual events of the memorial day were initiated. During these days, we have combined lecturers about Gustav II Adolf and his reign with the period-based cultural performances."

It will be possible to listen to Martin Bagge and band Mare Balticum already at the free concert "Ah, Libertas!", which will take place in assembly hall of UT. At the beginning of the concert, Ambassador of Sweden Anders Ljunggren, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Marco Kirm and Professor Sävborg will greet the audience, after which the band will present 17th century Swedish music and poetry.

The festive celebration of Gustav Adolf's day and 381st foundation day of Academia Gustaviana will take place as a result of cooperation between the University of Tartu, Embassy of Sweden, city government of Tartu and Nordic Council of Ministers' Office in Estonia.
